How to Determine How Much Mulch Is Needed for Your Yard

Jul 18, 2024

Figuring out how much mulch you need for your yard can seem like a daunting task. Don't worry though; with a few simple calculations, you'll know exactly how many bags or truckloads to get. Follow this guide, and you'll be mulching like a pro in no time.

Calculate the Square Footage of Your Beds

The first step is calculating the total square footage of the beds you want to mulch. Grab a tape measure and head outside. Carefully measure the length and width of each bed, and multiply them together to get the square footage. For irregularly shaped beds, divide them into squares or rectangles, and calculate each section separately. Then, add up the square footage of all your beds. According to HGTV, mulching no more than two times per year should be enough to keep your yard looking pristine.

Determine Mulch Depth

Decide how thick you want your mulch layer to be. Most experts recommend two to three inches. A shallower layer won't suppress weeds or retain moisture as well. But anything deeper than three inches can prevent water and oxygen from penetrating the soil. For a polished look, aim for two to three inches.

Do the Math

Once you have the area and desired depth, you can estimate the amount of mulch needed. For a quick estimate, remember that one cubic yard of mulch covers about 100 square feet at a three-inch depth. If your area is around 500 square feet, and you want a three-inch layer, you’ll need about five cubic yards of mulch. Knowing the volume of mulch required ensures you purchase the correct amount, avoiding multiple trips to the garden center or unnecessary waste. You can also ask an expert for help with an exact measurement.

Now that you know exactly how much mulch you need, it's time to start laying it down. Be sure to remove any existing mulch and weeds first. Then, spread your fresh mulch evenly across your beds. Take your time and use a rake to avoid any thin patches. Follow this simple guide whenever you need to refresh your mulch. And remember, adding around two inches of fresh mulch once or twice per year is ideal for a healthy, lush yard.
